Back Bay Sunrise
18 x 24 x 0.25 in., oil on linen hardboard
I was exploring Newport Beach's Back Bay one morning at dawn and I came upon this scene. The calm of the pre-dawn hours was so complete that the water was like a mirror, reflecting the west bluff perfectly. The sun's warm orange glow was lighting up the white cliffs, and the shadows of the east bluff were cast across the west bluff and descending the cliff as the sun rose behind me. The close bank was still cloaked in darkness and I found myself enveloped in the cool shadows of the east bluff, watching the tranquil retreat of the pre-dawn shadows. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed painting it!
